StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 48) “Brenda Epperson – Don’t Give Up If You Believe”

“Brenda Epperson – Don’t Give Up If You Believe”
featuring the song “I Cry Freedom”

I hope you heard the previous episode, in which I featured beautiful music and conversation with Brenda Epperson.  (If you missed it, go back and hear it here.)  In this conclusion episode, Brenda and I continue discussing her live event.  The ASCEND Conference, which she organizes with Susan Wehba and Kathleen Cooke, is an annual gathering that empowers and teaches women to triumph over their life challenges.  And music plays a huge role in that, as you will discover.  Brenda shares with me just how she came to write her powerful song, “I Cry Freedom” and the emotion she felt recording it.  Then, we talk briefly about her family ties and then back to her music.  As “I Cry Freedom” plays behind us, Brenda throws me a quick compliment about one of my songs.  But make sure to listen to her insightful advice at the end.  The message is very special.  Blessings on Brenda!!!

Featured Guest:   Brenda Epperson

“I Cry Freedom” was born out of AscendConference.org. This song was written by its founding co-director, Brenda Epperson. Her inspiration for the song came from Isaiah 61, and the sound for “I Cry Freedom,” came from the memories of her deceased father, Don Epperson. Don was a country western singer, as well as a RCA/Victor Recording artist on his way to success before his untimely death. Brenda is best known for the eight years she played Ashley Abbott on The Young & The Restless.  Her credits and accomplishments span over a decade. Brenda’s success in music is notable. She signed with Sony Tri/Star Music, charted with her Single “If You Believe,” and was chosen as the opening act for the world famous Lionel Richie on his “Time” tour.  Brenda and Lionel toured all over Europe, entertaining crowds that reached upwards of 20,000.

“I really hope you enjoy this new song I wrote, new sound, as well as the heart behind “I Cry Freedom.”

“People often ask me where I find such strength, I simply reply God. I want to thank my family and friends who have always been there for me. I believe nothing is impossible with God! Remember, it just takes ONE.

“Brenda Epperson – She Cries Freedom”
featuring the song “I Cry Freedom”

Every once in a while, I will meet a guest via telephone that has a dynamic personality and makes me want to reach through the phone line and give her a big hug.  In this episode, I met that kind of guest, the lovely and talented singer Brenda Epperson!   She has breathtaking beauty, the kind that was instrumental in landing her a full time part on The Young & the Restless, playing the character Ashley Abbott for more than 7 years.  But, as you will discover in our conversation, she has a profound love of music that stuck around with her whole life.  And wait until you hear her featured song, “I Cry Freedom.”  Brenda’s powerful lyrics and stunning vocals will confirm what I knew all along:  She loves the Lord and works tirelessly to spread His love through her music and incredible events.   Enjoy this introduction to Brenda, and be sure to hear the conclusion in the next episode!

StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 46) “Bunny DeBarge – I Want To Say I Knew You”

“Bunny DeBarge – I Want To Say I Knew You”

featuring the song “Say I Knew You”

I hope you heard the previous episode, in which I featured beautiful music and conversation with Bunny DeBarge.  (If you missed it, go back and hear it here.)  In today’s episode, we talk about Bunny’s gift of songwriting and how she communicated with her younger brothers to either co-write or bring her song visions to life.  I send love to Bunny regarding her voice and her music, both past and present.  Previously, I featured her amazing single “God Is Good,” but she gave me the honor of debuting a new song, “Say I Knew You!”  Maybe I’m not the first to play the single, but if I haven’t heard it, then it hasn’t debuted yet (haha!)   We also rub our foreheads in dismay at how today’s popular music has taken a strange turn from the old-school  hits we loved in the seventies and eighties.   All in all, it’s great fun, and you’re all invited to listen in!!

Featured Guest:   Bunny DeBarge

Bunny DeBarge is best known as the lone sister in the legendary Motown R&B family group DeBarge.  The eldest of the ten DeBarge children, Bunny’s unique high soprano vocal style and love of writing began at a tender young age.  She was the lead vocalist behind the classic R&B ballad, “A Dream,” from the group’s In a Special Way album and is also the co-writer of the group’s 1982 breakthrough hit, “I Like It,” and the number one hit, “Time Will Reveal.”  Her song “A Dream” was sampled and covered by the likes of Tupac Shakur and Blackstreet.

Bunny’s book “The Kept Ones, Vol. 1” tells the definitive story of her family and the world that made them.  She pours her life into the pages, sharing the trials and tribulations of her journey with sensitivity and insight.

In the words of Bunny:

God has been faithful and so very good to me through it all. Many of you have followed me faithfully from my days touring with my brothers as “DeBarge.” Those were good times, and lots of wonderful music and memories came out of that era. Behind the scenes , there was personal pain that most knew little about. I speak very candidly about the inner turmoil that I hid behind a smile in my book ,”The Kept Ones!” I’m facing my demons one by one, and determination is taking over where fear and doubt would have stopped me in my tracks. I’m getting “high on life” now and it is such a wonderful thing.

StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 45) “Bunny DeBarge – God Is Good For The Kept Ones”

“Bunny DeBarge – God Is Good For The Kept Ones”

featuring the song “God Is Good”

I had the genuine honor of featuring a very special guest on the radio program, Bunny DeBarge.  She is a gifted songwriter, a glorious singer, and today, she adds author and speaker to the mix.  Her current book is a three volume series titled “The Kept Ones.”  You know her family name from the phenomenal success that she and her younger brothers experienced under the Motown machine during the front half of the 1980’s.   DeBarge was one of my favorite musical artists back then, both lyrically and melodically, and seemed so positive and joyful on stage.  But, behind the curtain was a life of sadness and turmoil, consistently paired with addiction.  If you ever watched the DeBarge’s Unsung documentary from 2008, then you are aware of the desolate underside of a seemingly happy family performing their music.  Bunny and I discuss this sensitive subject, but “in a special way” because she gives us hope and shows that she is moving on, especially because God is moving with her and has transformed her life!   She deserves a wider platform for her stories, so you get to hear Bunny for two episodes!  Please enjoy our conversation and her latest song, “God Is Good.”  You’ll hear just how great she still is today!!

StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 37) “Frank Shiner – The Journey To a Brand New Day”

“Frank Shiner – The Journey To a Brand New Day”
featuring the songs “Brand New Day” and “The Real Me”

Ever since the day I met New York-based singer Frank Shiner, I have had the honor of his friendship and the privilege of rubbing elbows with a genuine entertainer.  Today’s episode reacquaints us with Frank, as he shares his experiences ranging from childhood to performing on stage in two legendary venues in midtown Manhattan.   In this first part of the conversation, it’s just Frank and Dean, a couple of friends talking.  He gives me an exclusive on the gradual shaping of a young performer, from fifth-grade and through high school.   Then I get some insight from Frank on performing, specifically on how to deal positively with butterflies.   We talk about singing competition shows, and how he maintains his vocal instrument.  All this, and two tracks from his album for you to enjoy.  We’re off to a great start!

Featured Guest:   Frank Shiner

FRANK’S COMMITMENT TO YOU:

1) You will always get a real, human, voice that is not overly processed and without cheating.

2) I will always be able to sing live the same way you hear me on my recordings

3) I will only do songs which I love or to which I am emotionally connected.

4) I will always give you the best I can give and I will never “phone it in.”

5) I have accepted a position as an “entertainer”… Therefore I will entertain. I will not bore you with my political leanings. The way I look at it, no matter what side of the political spectrum I choose to spew my opinions, I will alienate and annoy the opposite side. Therefore, half of my audience will not be entertained and I will not be fulfilling my duty. There is a time and a place for everything. Entertainment should not be tarnished by personal opinions. Besides, an entertainer’s point of view is no more important than anyone else’s.

If I should ever let you down on any of these points, I invite you to let me know.

StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 36) “Gordon Jensen – You Can Find Water In the Desert Of Your Days”

“Gordon Jensen – You Can Find Water In the Desert Of Your Days”
featuring the songs “God Makes the Impossible Probable” “Written In Red” and “Desert Of My Days”

Sometimes when I host my show StrongWriter On the Radio I can’t be shy when it comes to faith and encouragement.   Gospel songwriter Gordon Jensen has very strong faith in God and has written so many songs that exhibit this, so I thought I had to be on my best behavior and step up my Godliness.  This was not necessary, because Gordon has such an inviting and comfortable demeanor, and all I had to do was be myself. That’s obviously the right thing to do, anyway, right? In the conclusion of this two-part episode, Mr. Jensen and I pick up where we left off as we discussed publishing etiquette.  Then we exchange our musical philosophy, and I share three of his more popular songs and get his take on them.  Gordon concludes our conversation by imparting a little of his wisdom for artists of all types.

He was a true gentleman, and such a fantastic guest, that it was difficult to stop the conversation.  But he is definitely invited back!  Enjoy him while he is here on my show!!

Featured Guest:   Gordon Jensen

Recording artist and composer Gordon Jensen has become an institution in Christian music. The accolades bestowed on this man are many, as countless artists have recorded his material and church choirs all over the world sing his songs.

Born in Canada, and raised in a devout Christian home, Jensen accepted Christ as a child of six. A desire to serve the Lord and express love for Him through music led to his first public performance at twelve. By age sixteen, he was an integral part of The Orrells, a touring band which later evolved into Gordon Jensen and Sunrise. A ten-year affiliation with these groups provided a forum for Jensen’s songwriting and spanned several albums for Zondervan and Benson Co. labels.

Throughout the 1990’s, Jensen released three albums on the One Story label, all produced by Garrett Hestla.  Jensen’s album Listening Lord, is a ten song collection of recently written material, produced by J. D. Miller, a stellar musician who has worked with some of the biggest names in secular and gospel music.

Widespread radio airplay and chart success have followed Jensen through the years with #1 records like “God Still Loves the World”, “Bigger Than Any Mountain”, and “When I Lift Him Up In Praise.”

Nominated on five occasions for Songwriter of the Year by the Gospel Music Association, several of Jensen’s compositions have garnered the GMA’s Top Ten Songs of the Year distinction. Among the three hundred plus titles he has written: “I Should Have Been Crucified,” “Jesus Will Outshine Them All,” “He’s As Close As the Mention Of His Name,” “Tears Are A Language,” “Bring Back The New Again,” “Desert Of My Days,” “You’re The Only Jesus (Some Will Ever See),” and “Written In Red.” Collaboration with leading arrangers has yielded a number of widely used choral collections.  Jensen’s work defies categorization as it reflects many musical influences and appeals to a wide spectrum of people. He has enjoyed enthusiastic response in a variety of concert settings including colleges and churches of all denominations.

Translated into fifteen languages, Gordon’s songs have been recorded in excess of two thousand times by such artists as:  Cynthia Clawson, Larnelle Harris, The Imperials, Dallas Holm, The Cathedrals, Janet Paschal, Rusty Goodman, The Booth Brothers, Squire Parsons, The Continental Singers, along with names like Gaither, Winans, Roy Acuff, The Oak Ridge Boys, and a host of others.  Jensen and his music have been featured several times on the Bill and Gloria Gaither and their Homecoming Friends video series. The classic “Redemption Draweth Nigh,” which Jensen penned at age eighteen, has been recorded over three hundred times alone and became the musical theme for the movie “A Distant Thunder.”

“Gordon Jensen – Saved At Six and Soaring At Sixteen”
featuring the songs “Bigger Than Any Mountain” and “Redemption Draweth Nigh”

Some of the underlying tenets of my show StrongWriter On the Radio are faith and encouragement.   Gospel songwriter Gordon Jensen delivers on both points with affability and poise.  In the first of this two-part episode, Mr. Jensen shares his story from early childhood to the teenage years, where his musical and songwriting career started to become a reality.  We discuss in detail his adventures of touring and performing with the Orells at age 15 and never looking back.   Gordon and I conclude this episode talking about his songwriting career and explaining to me the etiquette of performing and recording his material.

He was a true gentleman, and such a fantastic guest, that it was difficult to stop the conversation.  I just ran out of time.  But there is so much more to enjoy in part two!

Janice Belitsky Fights Breast Cancer with Music – revisited

I was just thinking of my sisters in music, along with my female family members who have dealt with various forms of cancer, and I thought of this song by Janice Belitsky. She released this dramatic ballad three years ago, and I always like to share it every couple of months. She projects a beautiful classic voice and hasn’t put a lot of songs out there, but the ones shared with me privately are fantastic! But this one is worth a download. After all, proceeds benefit breast cancer research through Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Blessings on you women!

Go to CD BABY to check out the song!

By Janice Belitsky

With the release of her new single, til the Cure is Won, singer/songwriter Janice Alemian Belitsky makes it possible to fight breast cancer with a few clicks of your iPod. Belitsky is donating all proceeds from sales of the inspirational song to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

“For several years, I’ve strived to create a significant way to give my music purpose. ‘til the Cure is Won is a direct result of that effort. I wrote it on a day when I felt powerless to change what was happening to someone I loved. I hope the song will bring comfort and inspiration to everyone who hears it,” said Belitsky.

‘til the Cure is Won speaks to the hearts of those suffering from serious illness, as well as to the people who long to comfort them.

Belitsky began singing in nightclubs in the U.S. and Canada while still in her teens. She enjoyed a rewarding career for many years before taking a break from performing and touring to get married and raise a family.
A native of Massachusetts, Belitsky and her husband, Lee, live in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with their two children.‘til the Cure is Won is available for purchase on iTunes here, or at CD Baby.
