StrongWriter On the Radio: (Episode 65) “Richard Sherman – Good Songwriters Have Got To Expect Curves”

“Richard Sherman – Good Songwriters Have Got To Expect Curves”
including the songs “The Palin For President Polka” & “The Fracking Song” from the Sherman & Larsen album SMASH FLOPS!

There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow for my very special guest Richard M. Sherman! Having just turned 87 years old at the time of our interview, this living songwriting legend shows no slowing of his pace, and he continues to look at the creative road in front of him. Richard’s sanguine personality took over the show almost instantly, and he overdelivered in his storytelling and songwriting advice. This episode is one of four parts. Richard Sherman will be with me for two episodes, and the remaining two will feature his best friend and songwriting partner Milt Larsen (a.k.a. The Third Sherman Brother!) Both Sherman and Larsen added two relevant songs to their illustrious novelty compendium CD, Smash Flops, which we discussed at the beginning. From there, the conversation traveled from Richard’s beginnings in songwriting with his brother Robert to securing a job with Walt Disney. You are sure to catch the optimistic fever of Richard (“Call me Dick,” he told me before the interview, but I addressed him as Richard.)  So make sure you also listen to the following episode, as we were just getting warmed up!

~ Dean

Featured Guest:   Richard M. Sherman

Over the years, Richard M. Sherman and his late brother Robert B. Sherman, wrote more songs for motion pictures than any team in cinematic history.  As the foremost composer-lyricists in family entertainment, they have written the soundtrack of our childhood, most prominently working for Walt Disney.

Richard’s achievements include:  Two Academy Awards for Mary Poppins (score) and “Chim Chim Cher-ee” (song), nine Oscar nominations, three Grammy Awards, twenty-four Gold and Platinum albums, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, an honorary Doctorate from his alma mater, Bard College, and in 2008 at the White House, ‘National Medal of Arts’ the highest honor bestowed on American-born artists.

The Sherman Brothers wrote over 200 songs featured in Walt Disney’s films, TV shows and theme parks. Their 36 feature Disney film credits include:  Mary Poppins, Jungle Book, The Parent Trap, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Happiest Millionaire, and the Winnie the Pooh series. They wrote Disney’s long-running TV theme song, “The Wonderful World Of Color,” and their many contributions to Disney theme parks include: “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room,” “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” (Carousel of Progress), and “One Little Spark” (EPCOT).

Ooh-RAH!!! Happy Birthday U.S.M.C. – You’re 238!

The United States Marine Corps is 238 years old today! Ooh-RAH!!!

Presenting John Philip Sousa’s Semper Fidelis March, the official march of the U.S. Marine Corps and the oldest official song of the U.S. Armed Forces.

It cannot be inherited,
Nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive
Can buy it for any price.
It is impossible to rent,
And it cannot be lent.
You alone and our own
Have earned it
With your sweat, blood and lives.
You own it forever.
The title,
United States Marine

Semper Fidelis!

We salute you, and thank you for your service!
